A Touch Of Glass
Pilkington Automotive renews pan-European deal
Pilkington Automotive, one of the largest glass makers to the global car industry has renewed its pan-European freight management contract with P&O Ferrymasters.
Ferrymasters is Pilkington’s preferred freight partner and it has been rewarded for helping the tier-one automotive supplier develop its vehicle manufacturing and aftermarket footprint across Europe. The multi-million Euro, three year deal will see the partnership build upon the established automotive markets in 11 countries where Pilkington has made its presence felt with the help of P&O Ferrymasters.
"We have renewed the contract with P&O Ferrymasters based upon a solid track record of open-book innovation and performance that allowed us to optimise economies of scale across our European markets," says Pilkington’s Paul Yates.
Glazing on the average vehicle has increased by 20 per cent over the last two decades as innovative toughened and laminated glass reduces cabin noise and vibration and keeps out unwanted intruders and harmful solar rays.
In fact toughness, transparency and collaboration feature highly in the way the company conducts its business with P&O Ferrymasters. Pilkington is one of Ferrymasters’ top global accounts with an estimated turnover of €25 million per year and the movement of almost 30,000 consignments to and from 19 locations in 11 countries.
Poland and the former eastern European territories were the latest growth markets last year, providing competitive manufacturing footholds from where the mature car markets of Germany and the UK can be served.
The delicate shipment of glass consignments, all of which are of bespoke design, calls for the utmost transportation care via road, and increasingly by rail by taking advantage of Ferrymasters’ extensive intermodal capability, particularly on current shipments into Southern Europe.
Phillip Jones, POFM’s commercial manager for Pilkington team, says: "We will build upon what we have already achieved because Ferrymasters’ pan-European freight management is central to the relationship that we have with Pilkington. The contract renewal is testament to the focus by the whole team on efficient cost management and top-level customer service, achieved through a thorough understanding of the automotive sector."
