P&O Ferrymasters proves its mettle with record steel contract
A record steel transportation contract has been secured with Corus, one of Europe’s largest steel manufacturers, P&O Ferrymasters has announced today.
The four year contract with Corus involves moving steel by road from the company’s major plant at IJmuiden in The Netherlands and other associated sites. The contract, which was signed on 15 May, also gives Corus an option to extend the deal for a further two years up to 2013. Two previous contracts with Corus have been limited to three year terms.
Corus Staal, which has a major 750 hectare integrated steel production plant at IJmuiden, is part of the multinational Corus Group which has recently become part of the Tata Group. Corus Staal produces and distributes steel, mainly for the European packaging, automobile and construction industries. Steel from IJmuiden is also used in pipes, industrial vehicles and domestic household appliances.
Bas Belder, P&O Ferrymasters’ Managing Director, said: “We have been Corus’s preferred logistics partner for six years and this record contract reflects our ability to deliver the best independent freight management solution to this vitally important customer using our extensive expertise, skills and resources.
“We have been operating an open freight management service for Corus which means that we have a transparent and flexible partnership, sharing all the management information with Corus to add real value to the business. We have moved on from purely focusing on achieving transport cost savings to focusing on a more efficient supply chain at the deepest level which in turn will generate more savings despite changing market conditions and prices. This can only be achieved through a trusting and open partnership between our team and Corus.”
P&O Ferrymasters invested in 200 new coil trailers last year which will be used to service this contract. The trailers, which have an internal height of 2.7 metres, feature nine metre coil wells, sliding curtains and sliding roofs for steel and coil transportation and are designed for unaccompanied RoRo transportation.
P&O Ferrymasters is a market leader in the provision of integrated transport solutions and freight management services for European industry. It is part of P&O Ferries, which is owned by Dubai World, and employs 900 people at 28 strategic locations across 11 European countries.
